NEW DELHI: A five-year-old girl from Air Force School, Subroto Park, died when a van carrying her and other school kids jumped a red light and toppled over after hitting another car, near the Dhaula Kuan Metro station on Tuesday afternoon.
Gauri Trivedi, an upper kindergarten student was sitting next to the driver and suffered head injuries. She was declared 'brought dead' at Safdarjung Hospital. Another student, Kanika Goyal, was admitted in hospital bleeding and vomiting. Six other children suffered minor injuries.
The van, a private vehicle, did not have the required commercial permit, officials said. It was hired by a group of parents a few weeks ago.
Kin claim school recommended cab
Gauri's grandmother Pushpa Kalra said, "The cab was recommended by the school but we and other families from nearby colonies hired it".
School principal Deepika Thapar Singh said, "We have no clarity on the incident. I can't comment on the matter but the school had not hired the cab".
The Maruti Omni (DL 9C AC 2826), moving towards Gurgaon on Station Road, reportedly jumped the Cariappa Marg red light around 1.35pm.
"The van was being driven rashly. It rammed a Maruti Swift coming from the opposite direction (which had a green signal) and toppled on its left side," said traffic constable Brahm Prakash, an eyewitness.
Based on Prakash's statement, van driver Sumit has been arrested and booked for rash and negligent driving, causing death due to negligence and jumping a traffic signal.
According to Prakash, Gauri's head hit the windshield before she was thrown off the vehicle.
Additional commissioner of police (southwest) A K Ojha said, "Investigations on the cab are on. The Swift car was not at fault and had started to move when the signal turned green. It was the fault of the school cab driver alone".
Gauri's mother Shalini Trivedi is a doctor at a government hospital while her father, Chirag Trivedi, is a chartered accountant. The couple was in shock and declined comment.
