Man held in Arun Jaitley call details case once helped police trace Afzal Guru

One of the four men arrested by the Delhi Police for illegally accessing call detail records of the mobile phones of BJP leader Arun Jaitley, and possibly others, once helped police and intelligence agencies trace suspects in at least four terror cases, including the 2001 Parliament attack and the 2000 shootout at Red Fort. Police said his parents are former bureaucrats.

Special Cell officers still remember how Anurag Singh, a Maulana Azad Medical College graduate who was more interested in cyberspace than medicine, would sift through the mass of numbers and IP addresses to give them leads in terror probes. He would decode numbers, zero in on locations of suspects and also train agencies to shield their systems from hackers.

"At that time, we were not so sound technically. Anurag's help was sought in major cases involving mobile phones, satellite phones, computers. In the Parliament attack case, we recovered a SIM card. With the help of the IMEI number, he got us the entire phonebook, contacts, call details. For us, it was a new thing then. He helped trace Afzal Guru," an officer said.

Police turned to Anurag for leads in the attack on Red Fort attack. On the night of December 23, 2000, militants scaled the walls of Red Fort and attacked an army camp, killing two army personnel and a guard. Though a quick reaction team was scrambled, the militants escaped into the night.

From the spot, police found a paper slip with a mobile number. It finally led to the arrest of Mohammed Arif alias Ashfaq, a Pakistan national who police said was a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant. He was later sentenced to death.

An officer said police also turned to Anurag for help in two other terror cases of 2003. "He would break into email accounts, intercept phones, use surveillance equipment. He had an answer ready for every cyber query," the officer said, adding that "his intelligence got channelised in the wrong direction".

Anurag helped police between 2000 and 2003. In 2005, he floated a detective agency. A year later, he was arrested for his alleged role in the Amar Singh phone tapping case. He spent time in custody and the case is still in court. After his release on bail, Anurag invested in the stock market, and entered the business of surveillance equipment. He imported high-end gadgets from Singapore, Israel and China, police said.

Anurag is among the four men arrested who, police claim, illegally obtained call detail records of BJP leader Arun Jaitley. According to police, one of them broke into email accounts of officers and sent requests for CDRs. Anurag is currently in police custody where he is being questioned.

No rains in Delhi, rise in temperature

A day after record downpours in the capital, Delhiites on Wednesday got respite from rains as an overcast morning gave way to clear sky and rise in temperature.

The rain gauge measured 23.6 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am yesterday till this morning. The city witnessed virtually no rains during the day. Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, the city witnessed traces of rains today.

It was yet another overcast morning in the national capital with the minimum temperature settling seven notches above normal at 15.4 deg C.

The maximum temperature was recorded a notch below the normal at 21.6 deg C.

Yesterday, the capital witnessed heavy showers breaking a seven-decade record for highest rainfall in a single day in February. In total, Delhi received 57.1 mm of rains.

The MeT department has predicted a misty morning tomorrow with clear sky later in the day. Maximum and minimum temperature is likely to remain around 20 deg C and 9 deg C, respectively.

Doctor gets 10 years in jail for raping woman patient in hospital

A young doctor found guilty of raping a 30-year-old woman admitted to the ICU in a hospital at Navi Mumbai, was today sentenced to ten years imprisonment by a local court.

Thane Additional Sessions Judge R D Sawant handed out the punishment to Dr Vishal Vanne (26), who was also fined with Rs 1,000 along with another three-month imprisonment in the 2010 case.

Additional Public Prosecutor Sandhya Bacchav told the court that it was on October 16, 2010 the victim and her family including children, husband and a relative came to the Modern College grounds for Durga Pooja when she suffered uneasiness and was taken to the nearby Lotus Hospital in Vashi. That night she was admitted to the ICU as her condition worsened.

According to the complaint, the accused doctor was on night duty in the ward, where she was left alone with a staff nurse after a medical examination.

As the staff nurse was suffering from asthma, the accused asked her to leave the ICU and take rest. Thereafter the doctor allegedly gave an injection to the patient, making her drowsy.

The prosecution further told the court that after about two in the morning, the accused locked the door of the ICU from inside and molested the victim and also raped her repeatedly.

The victim, in her statement to the court said as she was not well that night, she could not shout or scream for help.

Next morning, when she narrated the incident to her husband, Vanne was handed over to the police.

The woman's husband told the court that on two occasions in the night he wanted to enter the ICU to check on the condition of his wife but could not do so as the door was locked from inside and also curtains were drawn.

Also, another patient in the ICU was fast asleep in the room when the incident took place.

The staff nurse, in her deposition, said she entered the ICU next morning around 5.30 AM after she was driven out the night before.

Delhi gangrape victim's family wants death for all accused

The family of Delhi gangrape victim on Friday said it would not want anything less than death sentence for all the accused, including the minor, and urged the Central government to amend the law in this connection.

The offer of a government job to one in the family by the Delhi government was turned down by the victim's brother.

"The family would never accept that the person who played a major role in the crime is let off with a mere punishment of three years only because he has the excuse that he is a minor," the grandfather of the 23-year-old victim said.

The family would urge the Central government to amend the law in this connection, he said.

The brother of the deceased, on phone from Delhi, said the offer of the Delhi government of government job to one in the family had been turned down and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has been informed of this.

The brother said as of now he is only an intermediate and so would not get a good job.

He said Dikshit had assured him of admission into an engineering course.

The brother said his family had full faith that the medical examination would prove him (minor accused) to be a major and pave way for the sternest of punishment.

The family wants that all the accused are given death sentence, he said.

The demand for amendment of the law comes in the backdrop of The Justice Verma Committee recommending life for gangrape but no death penalty.

Six killed in Mumbai slum fire

Six persons were killed and eight injured in a fire that gutted several hutments here today.

The fire broke out in Mahim's Nayanagar slum early today, fire brigade sources said, adding that the cause of the fire was not yet known. Eight fire engines and two ambulances were rushed to the spot, they said.

Asked to comment on reports that the dead included a

woman and three children, a spokesperson for the BMC's

disaster control room said the bodies were awaiting

identification.

Five bodies are at the Bhabha Hospital and the sixth is

at the Sion Hospital. The injured have also been shifted to the Bhabha Hospital, the spokesperson said.
