Day after girl was killed in accident, 2 officials suspended

A day after a five-year-old student of The Air Force School, Subroto Park, died in car crash, the traffic inspector of Delhi Gate Circle and the zonal officer of the area were suspended.

Gauri Trivedi died of head injuries after the driver of her private school cab jumped traffic light and crashed into another vehicle on Tuesday. The driver, Sumit, did not have permit to use the vehicle for commercial purpose and he had been ferrying the students illegally on the route for one year and had never been checked.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg said: “We have suspended the zonal officer of the area where the incident happened and also the traffic inspector of the Delhi Gate traffic circle. A department inquiry has also been ordered against the officials for allowing an unauthorised vehicle to ferry schoolchildren.”

Meanwhile, the Transport department also announced that the registration of the school van will be cancelled. “We have asked Delhi traffic police to forward the FIR to us. The school van was plying illegally, and while this should have been picked up by the traffic police, the Transport department will also take action against the private vehicle which was running as a school van,” Transport minister Ramakant Goswami said on Wednesday.

Education Minister Kiran Walia said: “The Transport department should act in a responsible manner. It is really surprising how the vehicle was plying on Delhi streets without having permit.”

The minister said she would hold a meeting with principals of private schools on improving safety of students using school transport.
