Vow to rid dept of factionalism: New IG

Promising a better police force, the new Inspector General (IG) of Chandigarh Police, R P Upadhyaya — who took charge as UT Police chief Wednesday — assured to free the UT police department from factionalism. Upadhyaya, who is the youngest UT IG, said that he will aim at satisfying each and every person who approaches a police station with a complaint by enhancing basic policing. The new IG said that maximum use of time and science will be made in functioning of police

"Chandigarh Police will have no time for politics. Now that I have taken the charge I belong to Chandigarh Police first, same should be the attitude of all the police officers. They (police officials) have no option but to understand that it is their police. There should be no factionalism," said the IG.

Upadhyaya said that Chandigarh Police is a fantastic force led by many leaders in the past. "I will be a beneficiary of their efforts. Chandigarh Police has maintained its assets which were created by the previous leaders. I will try to enhance the same," he said.

He also added that he will accomplish the modernisation works which were started by the previous IG, P K Srivastava. "We will make sure to make science resourceful for our efficient functioning," added the IG. Emphasising on improving the concept of basic policing the IG said, "My concept of basic policing is that a person who visits a police station should be satisfied." He said that the first task will be to prevent petty crimes.

"There is no such thing as a petty or a heinous crime. In my opinion, every crime is a heinous crime. All the minor crimes lead to major crime. So why not prevent them," added IG R P Upadhyaya.

Talking about encouraging community policing concept the Inspector General said: "I do not believe in flashy functions to cater to the needs of common man,"

He congratulated the parade platoon during the welcome parade of the IG.

"I have lead many parades but I have never lead such a fantastic parade. I must congratulate and thank the Chandigarh Police for this," said Inspector General R P Upadhyaya.
