Dongri police officers are believed to have submitted a confidential report to seniors allegedly stating that a former Assistant Commissioner of Police had harboured about 15-20 alleged rioters during clashes that broke out during the August-11Azad Maidan protests. Sources at Dongri police station revealed this, stressing anonymity.
The report is believed to have pointed out that former ACP Shamsher Khan Pathan harboured rioters in his official residence within the police station compound which he has been occupying even after his retirement on May 31.
According to officers, a CD showing video clips taken on the day of the riots showing rioters, their clothes stained in blood and mud, being harboured in the said house.
Two youth were killed and 52 people, including 44 policemen, were injured in riots that erupted during a rally against alleged atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar.
The protesters attacked police, including women constables, torched media and police vehicles, smashed cameras of photojournalists and damaged buses.
The Dongri police report is believed to state that after his retirement, Pathan continues to use his government accommodation, allegedly for political purposes. Police officers are said to have stated in the report that Pathan has been using the quarters to give interviews to the media, which they fear could lead to a law and order situation under delicate circumstances.
Krishna Prakash, Additional Commissioner of Police (South region), when contacted, said he might have received the report if it had been submitted by Dongri police officers.
When asked about the report, he, however, could not recall it or its contents.
"I might have forwarded the report to seniors if it has been submitted to me and will have to dig it out," said Prakash. When asked about the CD, Prakash said he did not recollect being given any CD but if the entire scene has been videographed, it would be crucial evidence.
Pathan could not be contacted for his comment.
